Requesting a Review

The University of Sunderland is committed to full compliance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000. If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your Freedom of Information request you have a right under Section 50 of the Act to request an internal review. This procedure has been drawn up in line with the Lord Chancellor's Code of Practice on the Discharge of Public Authorities' Functions under Part 1 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Internal Review procedure

If you are dissatisfied with the service you have received in relation to a request for information, please contact the Assurance Coordinator (Information Governance) to discuss the matter informally. We would hope to resolve most queries quickly without the necessity for an internal review.

Requests for an internal review must sent within 8 weeks to the address below and must clearly state the reference number assigned for the request and the reason you are requesting an internal review.  We will aim to respond to your request for an internal review within 20 working days of receipt.

Independent Review

Should you remain dissatisfied with the outcome of the internal review then you may apply directly to the Information Commissioner (the “ICO”) for an independent review.  The ICO is the Government’s Independent Body responsible for overseeing the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the Data Protection Act 1998 and The Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

Please note the ICO will only review cases that have exhausted the University’s internal review procedure.  All correspondence to the ICO must quote the University’s reference number and the reasons for your appeal. The ICO’s contact details are as follows:

The Information Commissioners Office,

Wycliffe House,

Water Lane,

SK9 5AF.

More information can be found at the ICO’s website at

If you have any further enquiries about this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0191 515 2040, or by emailing

The review will be investigated by or on behalf of the Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive who will provide a response within the above timescales.
