Seeking external support
We work closely with a number of external organisations who can provide support in various ways.
Staff can seek internal support through a variety of routes.
External organisations include:
Age UK - the largest organisation working with and for older persons.
Athena Swan - The Equality Challenge Units ’s Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research. In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students.
Business in the Community - is working to shape and improve relationship between business and society, in order to secure a fairer society, responsible businesses and more sustainable future for everyone.
Equality and Human Right Comission - is a collaborative body formed in October 2007 to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and build good relations, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to participate in society.
Equality North East - provides regional information service, which gives advice and guidance on equal opportunities within employment issues. It hosts job vacancies for employers who have good equal opportunities practices, including the University.
Equality Challenge Unit - works collaboratively with Higher Education Institutions on equality and diversity related issues for all who work or seek to work within the UK Higher Education sector.
Stonewall - is a lobbying group for gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people aimed at putting the case for equality on the mainstream political agenda and working in partnership with organisations to champion diversity.
Government Equality Office - is a cross cutting Home Office unit, which has responsibility within Government for equality strategy and legislation. Government Equality Office takes the lead on issues related to women, sexual orientation and transgender equality matters.
Inclusive communities - The University is an active partner in the Local Strategic Partnership and the Community Cohesion Group.
This aims for Sunderland to be a city where people from all backgrounds and communities:
