Annual Report
A summary of this year's Annual Report is available below. For the full report please see the bottom of the page.
The area of equality and diversity continues to develop across the UK political and social agendas. The latest major development in the UK arena was the Equality Act 2010 that sought to introduce greater harmonisation to existing equality legislation. We welcome this development as it reflects our own holistic approach to equality and diversity principles. The new public sector Equality Duty was brought into force on 6 April 2011.
As the University of Sunderland moves forward into a period of defined overarching themes, the area of equality and diversity is becoming increasingly embedded into all the University's activities and can therefore make a significant contribution to these key themes:
Recruitment - an institution with a reputation for working to remove barriers to achievement across its functions will be better placed to recruit effectively from a diverse pool of students and staff.
Retention - an institution that delivers fair practices, encourages consultation and provides effective support networks will benefit from greater commitment and retention levels.
Student Experience - an institution that delivers an inclusive environment, where students and staff are highly valued, based on mutual respect, will contribute towards a positive experience for all members of its community.
Partnerships - an institution that promotes ethical values enhances its business reputation and will forge stronger links with local, regional, national and international partners.
Equality and Diversity principles are now integral to the University's strategic planning processes, from our Corporate Plan to our new Academic Strategy.
In line with our strategic aims and the University's vision of being recognised as one of a new generation of great civic universities, we continue to work for an inclusive culture that promotes equality and diversity in the University and our wider environment. Our progress is documented within this report which can be accessed in full below.
