Induction
Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor

Hello and welcome to the University of Sunderland. I am
delighted to welcome you as a new member of staff.
I hope you enjoy this website and that it helps you settle in to your new environment and provides you with an insight into the structure, history and management of the University.
In addition to these induction pages and your local induction, a 'Joining the University' half day session is held each month for all staff. This will provide you with the opportunity to meet new members of staff and find out more about the University. In addition, all academic staff will be invited to an 'Orientation Programme' which is held every few months to introduce staff to all aspects of their academic role at the University.
The University is the third largest employer in the area and provides a wide range of courses to a diverse community of students.
We are proud to have one of the most diverse intakes of any University in England and we have been top of the widening participation league tables since they started. Nearly one-third of our students come from traditionally under-represented areas, partly because of our strong drive on recruiting locally. We also have a significant international population across the University with around one out of every ten students coming from overseas.
We work to continue to deliver a positive environment for the conduct of all our activities, where all members of our community treat one another with mutual respect and dignity. This will enable all staff and students to have a positive experience at the University and contribute to ensuring that we will fulfil our potential.
I would like to wish you the very best in your new role with the University of Sunderland and I hope you enjoy your time here.
Professor Peter Fidler
Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive
