Driving golf forward

The University of Sunderland are delighted to announce a new joint venture with Durham Golf Partnership – which will lead to greater participation and involvement in Golf over the summer months.

With the days getting longer, regardless of the temperature, this is the perfect opportunity to dust off the golf clubs and hit the greens.

Both Durham Golf Partnership and the University of Sunderland Institute of Sport are encouraging as many people as possible to take up the sport through ‘Get into Golf’, a 6 week taster program being rolled out across the region.

The program is being held at various venues, including Sunderland Golf Centre, and is aimed primarily at new players, but also at those ex-players who have lapsed from the game.

Jonathan Ward, Count Development Officer at the Durham County Golf Partnership, said: “We are looking to encourage new golfers, of any age and ability, to try the game.

“For just £15, you can earn professional PGA coaching which will hopefully give you an enthusiasm to carry on or reignite the passion in the sport.”

Ward believes its important that Golf clubs also do their bit to attract new members, and ‘Get into Golf’ is a step in the right direction. He said: “Across our region we have seen a drop in club membership, but actually, the number of people who are playing golf has risen.

“Memberships are seen as being quite rigid, with no flexibility. What I want to encourage are taster memberships, or more variety.

“People are still playing golf but they are more conscious of value for money and a year long membership fee and a big outlay on clubs – it can put people off.

“There is a misconception about the cost of golf. This program allows us to break down those barriers – its only £15, no dress code, no equipment hire – all those factors that might turn people off have been eradicated.”

‘Get into Golf’ is a 6-week group coaching course for £15 and is available across the region at:

Billingham Golf Club

Ramside Hall Golf Club

Sharpley Golf Club

Stressholme Golf Club

Sunderland Golf Centre

The Hobson Golf Club

The Sunderland sessions start on May 2nd until 6th June, Wednesday 6.30 – 7.30pm
