Graduate Research Support

Welcome to our pages for Postgraduate Research students which will provide support and information you will need throughout your studies.

Induction

When you start your studies at the University it is important that you:

  • Enrol on your programme
  • Pay your fees
  • Obtain a Campus Card
  • Activate your email account

Further details on all of these process can be found in the Research Student Handbook.

Once you are registered you will be able to access Canvas (Virtual Learning Environment).  This will include access to the Research Degree Module which will include detailed information of your induction programme and other training available to you during your studies.

The induction programme is to help you get off to a flying start.  It consists of 4 days and covers a huge range of topics, including: literature review strategies; writing in the academic research context; the research degree assessments and how to use them to your advantage; research methodology; research methods; what is originality; strategies for using library resources; referencing software; reading speed; managing your time; managing your project; and managing supervisory meetings.  This will take place usually within a month of your start date.

There is also a training development programme which offers support for developing researchers' capabilities for effectively and efficiently completing their postgraduate research studies; but also offers support for developing transferable life skills which are core requirements for any successful career.  Further information can be found on Centre for Enhancement of Learning and Teaching website.

PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF YOUR EXPIRY DATE OF REGISTRATION PROVIDED IN YOUR UNCONDITIONAL OFFER LETTER AS YOU WILL NEED TO SUBMIT YOUR THESIS BY THAT DATE.

The Graduate Research Support (GRS) team is responsible for the administration of research degree programmes providing support to research students and academic staff involved with research degrees, including: 

Application process management, admission and enrolment of PGR students
Management of transfers, withdrawals, leave of absence and extensions
Organisation of examination arrangements, including oral exams
Annual monitoring and progression
Changes to supervisory arrangements
Support for PGR related University Committees
