Congratulations on your achievement! This guide will help you and your guests enjoy a smooth and memorable graduation day. Please read carefully and refer to the sections below for all the details you need. 

Arrival Times

Please keep to the arrival times specified in your invite email and in this guide. Arriving promptly is essential for a smooth ceremony experience. Late arrivals may not be permitted into the ceremony, and no refund will be given.

Key Points:

At your scheduled CitySpace arrival time (above): Make your way to CitySpace, City Campus, Chester Road, Sunderland (SR1 3SD) for gowning and photography.

At your scheduled Fire Station arrival time (above): Make your way to The Fire Station, 9 High St West, Sunderland (SR1 3HA) for your graduation ceremony.

You MUST have a booking ticket with you in order to gain entry to your ceremony.

Please note that all guests aged 2 and over require tickets to attend the ceremonies and we do not provide free tickets to attend our graduation ceremonies at the Fire Station. We will not be offering on the day ticket sales.

Graduate Arrival at CitySpace

  • Please arrive no later than your scheduled arrival time (above) at CitySpace.
  • Guests may accompany graduates to CitySpace for gowning if they wish. Tickets are not required to enter.
  • While at CitySpace you will be able to mix with your friends and family. Remember to visit the Alumni Association stall where you can browse merchandise, and pick up a free set of postcards, designed to mark your special day. Next to us, the Students’ Union stall will also be offering a range of student merchandise to browse. You can also find out more what’s on offer for you as a Sunderland graduate, including discounted membership at the University’s CitySpace fitness suite.
  • Once gowned and photographed, proceed to The Fire Station. Staff will guide you along the way.

Graduate & Guest Arrival at The Fire Station

  • Please arrive no later than your scheduled arrival time (above) at The Fire Station. Punctual arrival is required. Late arrivals may not be permitted into the ceremony and no refund will be given.
  • Ensure you have your booking ticket with you for entry. Graduates must also have their student ID card.
  • Please enter the marquee tent at the front of The Fire Station to access the building.
  • Graduates: Once inside, register with the University’s Awards Team and collect your seat ticket and name card. You will also receive a Graduation Brochure and free pin badge.
  • Guests: All guests must have possession of their own ticket (no ticket, no entry).
  • For any ticket issues on the day, please see a member of University staff.
  • Announcements will be made prior to the ceremony start and you will be shown to your seat as per your ticket.
  • Bags and coats must be left with guests or under your seat. Please note: bags larger than A4 in size will not be permitted in The Fire Station.
  • Marshals will direct graduates throughout the ceremony.
  • Mobile phones must not be used while crossing the stage.
  • A short, pre-ceremony briefing will explain how the event will run.
  • After the ceremony, graduates and guests will exit the auditorium and receive a token for refreshments and food. You will be guided to the relevant area by marshals.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Parking and Transportation

  • Our city campus is located next to the University Metro stop and is a short walk from Park Lane transport interchange. Use Plan Your Journey | Traveline to plan your journey.
  • Car parking is available in the city - Car parks - Sunderland City Council.
  • University car parks will not be accessible to graduates or guests.
  • Parking/dropping off outside The Fire Station will not be permitted, unless graduates or their guests have accessibility requirements.
  • Local transport options include buses, metro, train services, and taxis.

Accessibility Services

  • Accessible Parking: There are no designated spaces available at The Fire Station.
  • Venue Access: The Fire Station is fully accessible, with ramps and elevators. Clear signage will direct you.
  • If you require accessible seating for guests using wheelchairs or other mobility devices, please ensure you book these online when booking guest tickets.
  • Assistance: Staff are available to help guests with disabilities. For assistance, please ask a member of University or Fire Station staff.

Children

  • Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. The University cannot care for children whose parents are participating in the ceremony.
  • All guests aged 2 and over need a valid ticket. Children under 2 do not require a ticket but must sit on the knee of a ticketed guest.

Pushchairs

  • Pushchairs are not allowed in the auditorium. Please use the designated pushchair parking area in the Foyer Bar. Ask staff for details on arrival.
  • Once the ceremony has commenced, staff will move pushchairs to the post-ceremony area. Please do not leave valuables in pushchairs. The University and The Fire Station cannot accept responsibility for any loss or theft.
  • All pushchairs must be parked 15 minutes before the ceremony begins.

Photography & Graduation Clips

  • Ede & Ravenscroft will provide photography at CitySpace.  Photography can be done before or after your graduation ceremony.
  • All graduates and guests may be included in official photographs.
  • You can choose to purchase a clip of your graduation moment from our partners at MyGraduationClip. You can scan the QR codes in the venue or visit their website at MyGraduationClip.com.

Code of Conduct

  • Please respect all attendees and allow everyone to enjoy the event without disturbance.

Gown Return

  • Gowns can be returned at The Fire Station (outside the Ticket Office) or at CitySpace Sports Hall.
  • Gowns must be returned by 18:15 (Monday–Thursday) or by 16:15 (Friday).
