This handbook has been developed to assist you in understanding what working as an academic at the University of Sunderland means, and aims to clarify our expectations of the professional role of an academic. It also sets this into context by providing you with information on relevant processes, policies and procedures. The handbook has been prepared in consultation and partnership with the University’s recognised academic staff union, the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) and is updated on a regular basis.

The handbook covers full-time and part-time academic staff at the Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer grades within the University. It contains the main provisions outlined in the 1992 national agreement and incorporates both locally
and nationally negotiated collective agreements which have subsequently varied the contract.

It contains both contractual and non-contractual elements. Where such policies and procedures are contractual, this is specified within the Statement of Particulars (Contract of Employment).
