In the University of Sunderland Staff Survey 2015 a substantial number of employees said that they currently have caring responsibilities and/or expect to have these within the next 5 years. With this in mind, the University has developed this guidance to provide flexibility to employees in order for them to remain at work and manage both work and caring commitments alongside each other.

According to Carers Trust, 3 in 5 people will be carers at some point in their lives in the UK. It is the intention of the University to provide options to employees, to help us retain staff who may, without these mechanisms, feel they need to leave the University due to their care responsibilities. It is understood that each situation is unique to the individual concerned and that caring commitments may be short or long term. It is also acknowledged that the requirements and demands of carers may fluctuate and there are a number of options available to employees to help manage this alongside their contractual work obligations.
