First Aid & Refresher Training

The University has a number of trained First Aiders across the Campus. Those staff who are identified as a First Aider through their Faculty/Service risk assessment must undertake initial First Aid training and the mandatory refresher training.

First Aid Training

This course is designed for staff who are to become First Aiders and need to receive the most thorough first aid training. You must complete the training before commencing the role.

This course will cover how to deal with the following:

  • The role of the First Aider
  • Managing an emergency
  • Communication and casualty care
  • Asthma
  • Bleeding (minor and sever)
  • Bone, muscle and joint injuries
  • Chest pains (including heart attack)
  • Choking (adult)
  • Eye injury
  • Fainting
  •  Head injuries
  • Health and safety (first aid) regulations
  • Low blood sugar
  • Poisoning
  • Resuscitation (adult CPR)
  • Seizures (adult)
  • Shock
  • Spinal injuries
  • Stroke
  • Unconscious casualties

Who would benefit

Training is only available to staff who have been identified to do so through their Faculty/Service risk assessment.

Refreshing Training
Refresher training is required every 3 years

Duration: 3 days (First Aid at Work)
Location: Provided by an external training on site

Emergency First Aid at work

First Aiders are required to re-qualify every 3 years. Therefore, this course is designed for staff to refresh their knowledge and training in emergency first aid. 

The content of this course provides basic life saving first aid and workplace health and safety regulations, covering the following:

  • The role of the first aider
  • Managing and emergency
  • Communication and casualty care
  • Bleeding (minor and severe)
  • Burns
  • Choking(adult)
  • Fainting
  • Health and safety (first aid) regulations
  • Resuscitation (adult CPR)
  • Seizures (adult)
  • Shock
  • Unconscious casualties

Who would benefit

Current first aiders who are approaching their 3 year re-qualification.

Location: Provided by an external training on site
