At the University of Sunderland, sustainability is a shared responsibility—and students play a vital role in helping us build a greener future. Whether you’re commuting to campus, living in halls, or attending lectures, your everyday choices can make a big difference.
We encourage all students to choose low-carbon travel options. Walking, cycling, using public transport, or car-sharing are great ways to reduce your environmental impact. The University is actively working to reduce carbon emissions from commuting and supports sustainable travel through initiatives like cycle hubs and travel planning. You can view the University Travel Guide on SharePoint: Travel Guide
Waste reduction is a key priority. Please make use of the recycling bins across campus and in halls, and think carefully before throwing items away. Reuse where possible, and help us reduce single-use plastics. Every small action contributes to our goal of cutting emissions from waste by 20% by 2030. Find out more on SharePoint: Waste Management
Be mindful of your energy and water use. Simple actions like switching off lights, unplugging devices, and reporting leaks help us move toward our Net Zero Carbon Campus target by 2040. Find out more on SharePoint: Energy
The University is committed to protecting and enhancing biodiversity across its campuses. Students can help by respecting green spaces, avoiding littering, and participating in habitat improvement projects such as tree planting, wildflower sowing, and wildlife surveys. These efforts support local ecosystems and contribute to a healthier, more resilient environment. Find out more on SharePoint: Biodiversity
Students are invited to join our Sustainability Community of Interest, volunteer on environmental projects, and take part in events like litter picks, community gardening, and sustainability hackathons. These are great opportunities to meet others, build skills, and make a positive impact. Find out more on SharePoint: Get Involved
