An Application for an Extension of a Research Degree Programme will be considered for approval by the Research Degrees Group (RDG), which is held monthly, you do not need to attend this.  All sections of the form, including signatory approvals, must be completed before forwarding onto the Graduate Research team at grs@sunderland.ac.uk.

An application to extend the period of registration can be for up to 12 months after the original expiry date of registration (regulation 3.8).  Applications will only be approved if there are acceptable extenuating circumstances explaining the need for the extension.

Applications should be accompanied by supporting evidence that details the nature of the extenuating circumstances that have prevented the submission of the thesis by the end of the registration period. The RDG will decide whether the application properly supports the request.

If the application is not approved, the student will not be permitted to submit the thesis for examination and the Postgraduate Research Degrees Sub-Committee (PRDSC) will be notified of the withdrawal of registration.

International students must have a valid visa that covers the period of extension requested.
