Research Students’ Fieldwork

Home / Post-Graduate Research Student Handbook / Overview of a Post-graduate Research Degree Student’s Programme / Research Students’ Fieldwork

Any periods of study away from the University must be discussed and agreed with your Director of Studies in advance of leaving the University.

If an overseas student wishes to undertake research abroad for longer than 4 months, then sponsorship of the student’s visa will be withdrawn by the University.   To return to study the student will need to apply for another visa. You must also meet with the staff in the International Student Support office prior to travelling who will explain any visa implications of study away from the University and will also request a copy of flight tickets as evidence that you are leaving the UK.

The University must be informed of the country and region in which you are undertaking the fieldwork and provided with contact details.  Your Director of Studies will ensure the area you are travelling to is safe and acceptable to the University’s insurers for travel.  The period of fieldwork must also be agreed with your Director of Studies.

Supervisory meetings must still continue by video conferencing with your supervisory team during the period of fieldwork.
