Writing Up Stage

A period of one year is allowed for writing up the thesis, this commences in your final year of study (i.e. full time PhD = year 4).

For full time students the thesis is expected to be submitted by the end of the 3rd year, however if you need to enter the 4th year your viva voce (oral) examination of the thesis, any subsequent corrections to the thesis and subsequent ratification of the award should be completed by the end of this period.

Where there is evidence that the research is proceeding exceptionally well, the Postgraduate Research Degrees Sub-committee may approve a shorter minimum period of registration. An application for such shortening should be submitted at the same time as the application for approval of examination arrangements.

Changes to Tuition Fee

For full time students, your mode of study will be changed to Write Up when you enter your 4th year of study.  If you enter the write up phase before the end of your 3rd year of study, this will need to be confirmed by your Director of Studies.

For full time students – the amount of tuition fees you pay will reduce when you enter the write up phase, the amount is specified in your offer letter.

International students are permitted to remain in the UK for 1 year to write up the thesis provided you have a current Tier 4 visa.

Please note – if you need to apply to the UK Visas & Immigration for an extension of your visa at this stage – please allow 4 months to complete this process.  Further information can be obtained from http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/.
